How Is Solar Energy Harnessed For Use

Solar energy is one of the most eco-friendly power sources that we have available. Unlike coal-burning electrical plants, solar energy does not emit harmful pollutants that roam within the earth’s atmosphere. Here is how solar energy is harnessed.

Photovoltaic cells
Photovoltaic cells are designed to absorb the sunlight. These cells are usually grouped into a module so that their power outputs can be combined together. Each cell produces 1-2 watts, so they can produce a substantial amount of energy when bundled together.

Light Absorption
As the sunlight begins to shine down on the photovoltaic cells, the electrons and protons begin to balance each other out to produce electrical power. This process is similar to the negative and positive terminals on a battery.

Solar Thermal Energy
Heat is one of the byproducts of solar energy that can be harnessed for use. A collector is able to store the thermal energy so that it can be used at a later time.

Power Grid
Due to the fact that some solar power systems have excess amounts of energy, the extra energy can be transferred back to the power grid for the electrical companies to use.
